Anyway, here it is: David, you gotta come up with a better acronym for your ethos. "URGJJ" just doesn't have the same "umph" as, say, TULIP. TULIP, while a horrid theological system (IMHO), is at least easy to remember and has a nice ring to it. URGJJ, sadly, doesn't.

Aside from the silliness, your ethos is very admirable, not the least for it being imitable. I also think one of things Jesus is trying to teach us in ever-widening circles of learning who our neighbours are is the inter-connectedness of all things - so I try to image the eucharist as a connection not only to Christ but through Christ to everyone else who has shared a eucharist.

kenalto9https://www.blogger.com/profile/07475263455843710730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1662873843702764917.post-90327209724283067952013-03-27T23:52:27.689-04:002013-03-27T23:52:27.689-04:00Thanks for the question. It's been almost two...Thanks for the question. It's been almost two years since I read the book, so I'm a bit fuzzy as to whether the book uses the phrase "risen faithful" or whether that was my interpretation. At first blush, I think I can say "yes" to your understanding of it. It was a reference to those who died in the faith. I recall that in the book the Eucharistic feast ritually brings the presence of Christ and those who have been part of that local Christian community and who have died.

You may have noticed from the first part of this that I included a parenthetical caveat about the afterlife: "if there be such a thing." From an earlier book of Brock's, I gather that she is speaking phenomenologically rather than literally. Those in the here and now experience the presence through memory and ritual. This book is not referring, in my opinion, to something supernatural taking place.

In addition, Brock is deeply involved in interfaith activities, so, while I don't recall the both touching on any interfaith concerns, I don't think it intends to imply that only Christians have a place in this ritual paradise on earth. So "risen faithful" may have been my words. Again, I'm not certain of that.David Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07650300919139654311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1662873843702764917.post-38502038621891523192013-03-27T23:20:25.046-04:002013-03-27T23:20:25.046-04:00Thanks, Deborah. At coffee after church one day, I spoke to a visitor. She asked me if I could see the light coming from a Bishop's hands when they confirmed or ordained someone. She had not even finished the question before I answered "Of course not!" Which, of course, is why not.

Having long worked in the woods, and having a great love of trees, which I think of as condensed sunlight, it is not too big a stretch to agree with Pete Rollins when he says that we can see the burning bush once we realize every bush is on fire.

be blessed and blessing - kenalto9kenalto9https://www.blogger.com/profile/07475263455843710730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1662873843702764917.post-10212077447046340912013-03-27T11:54:01.327-04:002013-03-27T11:54:01.327-04:00Thanks for the encouragement! Thanks for the encouragement!David Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07650300919139654311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1662873843702764917.post-57244027952970190772013-03-27T10:47:09.925-04:002013-03-27T10:47:09.925-04:00Tear down the walls! Thanks for commenting.
I absolutely be...Hi, John,

Thanks for commenting.

I absolutely believe in holiness. I certainly don't mean to say that holiness and love exclude one another.

I think when holiness is understood apart from love, it is exclusive and leans toward hatred, such as that of the Westboro Baptist Church, to which I was writing in response.

I am a United Methodist clergyperson, and holiness is an essential part of our tradition. Holiness, though, in the Methodist tradition, means becoming perfected in love. That leaves no room for hatred whatsoever. I see that you are from the same tradition and surely know what I mean.

Holiness is defined by love, not the other way around. Love isn't defined by God's holiness. Our holiness is defined by God's love.

I'm not saying God is not holy or sovereign. I'm saying that when we prioritize that above God's love, we are not following the way of Christ.David Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07650300919139654311noreply@blogger.com
